Samourai Wallet and the federal government requested the court to extend the time to consider the cancellation of the encryption mixer case.
Source: Cointelegraph Original text: "Samourai Wallet requests the court to extend the consideration period for the federal government's case to revoke the crypto mixer."
Federal prosecutors in the U.S. and a co-founder of the cryptocurrency mixer Samourai Wallet have requested the court for more time to consider a possible dismissal of the case, following the U.S. Department of Justice's cutback of its cryptocurrency enforcement team.
Lawyers for Samourai Wallet CEO Keonne Rodriguez and CTO William Hill stated in a letter to Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman on April 28 that they jointly request a "16-day extension of the pre-motion schedule" with the government.
The executive lawyer of Samourai stated on April 10 that they had written to acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, requesting the dismissal of the case, following a memorandum issued by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on April 7 that shut down the Justice Department's cryptocurrency team.
The lawyers stated: "On April 24, 2025, the defense attorney met in person with the prosecutor and their superiors at the U.S. Attorney's Office to discuss this request."
The letter states: "The defendant believes that extending the schedule for the pre-trial motion is reasonable to avoid significant costs in preparing the motion while the government determines its position."
The letter also added that the prosecution agreed to postpone "without expressing any views on the substance of the case."
Rodriguez and Hill of Samourai Wallet were charged in April 2024 with conspiracy to launder money and operating an unlicensed remittance business, both pleaded not guilty.
Blanche's memo mentions: "The Department of Justice is not the regulatory agency for digital assets," and states that it will abandon enforcement and investigation except for "cases targeting individuals who harm digital asset investors or use digital assets in criminal activities."
Currently, the motion deadline for the Samourai executive case is May 13, the response deadline is June 10, and the reply deadline is June 24. The letter proposes to postpone the motion time to May 29, the response time to June 26, and the reply time to July 10.
This extension will not affect the trial date scheduled for early November.
This move is the latest item on the long list of court actions under the Trump administration's favorable stance towards the industry, aimed at dismissing the prosecutors' crypto cases.
On April 9, SafeMoon CEO Braden John Karony was charged with telecom fraud and money laundering, citing Blanche's directives to request dismissal of the case.
At the same time, on April 28, the DeFi Education Fund petitioned the White House to drop the charges against Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and requested immediate action to "stop the Biden administration's illegal crackdown on open-source software development" by the Department of Justice.
