The SEC has appointed former white-collar crime defense attorney Kevin Muhlendorf as the new inspector general.
[Coin World][The SEC appoints Kevin Muhlendorf as the new Inspector General] According to an official announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has stated that Kevin Muhlendorf will officially become the new Inspector General of the agency on July 28. Mr. Muhlendorf has served as a lawyer at the SEC and the Department of Justice, and for the past nine years, he has been a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm Wiley Rein LLP, focusing on representing individuals and entities in white-collar crime defense and government investigations in criminal and civil securities enforcement cases. Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to the position of Deputy Inspector General.
During his private practice, Mr. Muhlendorf frequently led sensitive internal investigations and provided compliance consulting for clients. From 2023 to 2024, he was assigned to Wiley Rein as the Acting Inspector General for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), leading a team of over thirty auditors and special investigators to conduct investigations and publish financial and performance audit reports. He also designed and implemented a whistleblower reward pilot program.
