Wallets, Transactions and SUI Staking

In this module, you will learn about the different wallet options available on the SUI blockchain, their setup processes, and the features they offer. The module also covers staking and earning mechanisms, transaction management, and security features.

SUI Wallet Setup

SUI offers some wallet options to manage digital assets, including browser extensions and mobile apps. The primary wallet, developed by Mysten Labs, is available as both a browser extension and a mobile app for Android and iOS. To set up a SUI wallet, download the extension from the Chrome Web Store or the mobile app from the respective app store. Create a new wallet by following the setup instructions, which include generating a mnemonic phrase for recovery and securing it in a safe place.

The wallet interface allows users to manage SUI tokens, interact with decentralized applications (DApps), and conduct transactions securely. It supports zkLogin, enabling users to authenticate with web credentials like Google or Facebook without exposing sensitive information.

Staking and Earning

The SUI wallet facilitates participation in the network’s Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism. Users can stake their SUI tokens to contribute to network security and earn rewards. To stake tokens, select the ‘Stake and Earn SUI’ option in the wallet, choose a validator to delegate tokens to, and complete the staking process. Users can withdraw their stake and claim rewards at any time through the wallet interface.

Sui Wallet And Staking

SUI Wallet is a tool designed to manage digital assets on the Sui network. Available as both a browser extension and a mobile app, SUI Wallet enables users to view and manage coins and NFTs, acquire new digital assets, and transfer ownership with ease. Users can create, import, and securely store mnemonics and private keys, log in with social login providers via zkLogin, and connect to decentralized applications (dApps). The wallet also provides functionalities for staking and earning rewards directly within the interface.

Sui uses a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system to secure and operate the network. The voting power of a validator in the network is determined by the amount of stake delegated to them by SUI token holders. Validators earn rewards by processing transactions and performing consensus, which are shared with stakers as staking rewards. Users can stake their SUI tokens by sending a transaction to the network, which wraps the tokens in a self-custodial stake object containing details like the validator staking pool ID and activation epoch.

To stake SUI, users typically use SUI-compatible crypto wallets, which offer functionalities to initiate staking and unstaking. Users send a transaction that calls the staking function, wrapping their SUI tokens into a stake object. This process involves selecting a validator to delegate the stake to. Factors to consider when choosing a validator include the validator’s commission rate and performance. Validators with higher commission rates take a larger percentage of staking rewards, while validators with poor performance might be penalized, affecting the rewards received by stakers.

Unstaking involves sending a transaction that calls the unstaking function, which unwraps the stake object and returns both the principal and accumulated rewards as SUI tokens. Rewards are accrued during epochs where the stake is active for the entire epoch. When unstaking, it is essential to choose the appropriate time, as rewards are calculated based on the activation and unstaking epochs.

Staking SUI tokens allows users to earn a share of the rewards collected from gas fees and, in the early phases, stake subsidies. These rewards are distributed proportionally based on the amount of stake delegated to validators. Users can monitor the performance and commission rates of validators through SUI-compatible wallets and explorers to optimize their staking rewards.

Highlights

  • SUI offers multiple wallet options, including the standard Sui Wallet, Ethos Wallet, Surf Wallet, and Nightly, each with unique features like zkLogin for secure authentication and multi-chain support.
  • The Sui Wallet facilitates staking and earning through Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), allowing users to delegate SUI tokens to validators and earn rewards directly from the wallet interface.
  • Transactions on SUI are efficient and cost-effective due to parallel processing, which allows multiple transactions to be executed simultaneously, reducing congestion and maintaining low, predictable fees.
  • Security features in SUI wallets include encryption, secure storage of private keys, multi-factor authentication, and support for multi-signature transactions, enhancing transaction security.
  • Popular SUI wallets like Ethos, Surf, and Nightly offer extra functionalities such as automatic transaction confirmation, support for on-chain games, and mobile-friendly interfaces to cater to various user needs.
